QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Must clear criminal and child/adult abuse background check
Valid Iowa teaching license
Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
Experience preferred
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Planning
Direct instrumental performers, including marching band, jazz band, concert band, soloists and ensembles
Select music appropriate for the experience level and type of musical group
Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including, but not limited to concerts, athletic events, marching and jazz band competitions, honor bands and solo and ensemble contests
Register bands/students for competitions; arrange for transportation for out-of –town events
Arrange for summer training of band and auxiliary groups
Support and actively participate in Fine Arts Booster organization
Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs
Recommend policies to improve the district instrumental music program
Budget and Inventory
Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs
Prepare and submit purchase orders for registrations for competitions, music and equipment
Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds
Maintain inventory of all fixed assets within the department
?Oversee process of cleaning, repairing and storing all band equipment and uniforms
?Instruction
Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required
Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences
Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Department of Education, board polices and best practice
Plan and use appropriate instruction and learning strategies, activities and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
Student Management
Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with school board policies and student handbook
Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips; arrange for chaperones
Take all reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment and facilities
Publish basic rules for proper student participation in band activities
Communication
Establish and maintain open communication with parents, staff and students
Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community
Work closely with district instrumental staff to coordinate instrumental music program
Personnel Management
- Assist with the recruitment, selection, training of Color Guard Sponsor
