Job Overview

Within Product Validation Engineering (PVE) at DTNA the North American Test Mechatronics (PTM) Departmet tests features with strong focus on integration of mechanical, electrical and software systems.

The following are the key vehicular electrical/electronic areas of focus for which vehicle use case definition, test case development and test case execution are performed:

  • Cab: Visibility, Driver Comfort & Controls, Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Driver Assistance systems: Active, Passive, and Interactive Safety

  • Powertrain Systems: Engine, Transmission, Aftertreatment

  • Powernet and Wiring systems: Starting, Charging and vehicle wiring

  • Braking Systems: Service Brakes, Parking Brakes, Stability Controls, Convenience Functions

Validation is conducted during workshops, on the road and at offsite testing facilities. The group interfaces with many departments in the organization, suppliers, and customers.

This role is within the Systems Integration team and is responsible for brake feature testing of various features on pneumatic and hydraulic braking systems.

In addition to brake feature validation, the Systems Integration team is responsible for several mechatronics validation enablers such as instrumentation, test truck software updates and validation data analytics.


  • Plan, organize, lead, and execute test activities related to electrical, electronic, mechanical, environmental reliability, and safety of braking systems on medium to heavy-duty truck platform

  • Primary responsibility for validating various Brake Features on pneumatic and hydraulic braking systems

  • Develop design verification plans and reports (DVP&R). Identify the objectives and applicable standards, define test cases and test procedures. Execute test plan. Document test results with conclusions and recommendations via informal and formal reports and presentations to engineering management

  • Advise project leads and manager of project scope, impacts, and timing as it relates to validation efforts and activities for projects. Lead work packages. Develop timelines and budgets for projects

  • Independently prioritize assignments consistent with business goals and successfully implement projects on time and within budget. Inform management of project issues, delays, and risks

  • Proactively interface and coordinate with product design, suppliers, warranty, and other departments in the product development and testing phases. Provide engineering technical assistance to personnel within and outside of the department

  • Investigate unresolved field issues and warranty returns for root cause and improve the DVP&R to uncover the failure in subsequent testing

  • Improve the competitive market position by keeping abreast of the state of the art developments in the truck industry and applying the new knowledge to testing of designs. Generate and implement ideas to continuously improve the work environment, systems, tools, processes as well as product cost and quality

  • Work with vehicle technicians to ensure vehicle components, hardware, software, measurement equipment is up to date and working properly

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • BS/BA in Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering and 2-4 years of relevant experience required

  • Strong collaboration, speaking, and presentation skills required

  • Must be able to lead/support electronic integration testing for over the road vehicle tests, including major quarterly road tests required

  • Experience leading technical projects required

  • Experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems is required. Troubleshooting experience is required

  • Experience resolving field and customer issues required

  • Ability to develop conclusions and recommendations from testing, summarize and present results to peers and management required

  • Commercial Drivers License ( CDL) or ability to obtain one in the first year required

Typical Minimum Experience Preferred (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Experience with pneumatic or hydraulic automotive braking systems preferred

  • Knowledge of embedded processor control logic, and ability to program controllers preferred

  • Experience and ability to interpret vehicle/component/feature specification. Must develop & execute test cases on vehicle related E/E systems preferred

  • Whole vehicle test experience, to include developing test plans and pass/fail criteria, managing test activity, generating formal reports preferred

  • Detailed knowledge of vehicle electrical and electronic systems, test instrumentation, data acquisition/analysis software and testing methodology preferred

  • Ability to analyze electrical and electronic circuits, comprehension of electrical transients and steady state properties, experience with Controller Area Networks (CAN) networks and electrical measuring equipment such as DMM, Oscilloscope, etc preferred

  • Experience with Vector tools, ADTF, python, or C preferred
