This position is in Thermal Management Systems, which is part of Chassis Powertrain Engineering. This group is responsible for the design, performance, and integration of diesel engine cooling systems and zero-emission vehicles (e.g. battery-electric and fuel cell). Powertrain Engineering is a fast moving and rewarding new product development group responsible for installation of powertrains and development of peripheral systems.
Concept, develop, and release best-in-class solutions for Western Star and Freightliner vehicles, with awareness to overall vehicle packaging
Apply theoretical principles and engineering techniques to design systems that are reliable, serviceable, efficient, and competitive and use the latest technology available
Support truck manufacturing plants, sales order processing, quality groups, and service engineering
Promptly respond to shop calls and plant build issues. Understand the ramifications of these issues and how their potential solutions roll out across multiple projects and products. Select and implement suitable counter measures
Interface and support other teams including product design, validation engineering, compliance, manufacturing, sales and marketing
Interact with multi-tier supplier base to ensure conformance of designs to specifications, internal and external customer expectations, engineering practices and government regulations
Provide a broad emphasis on continuous improvement and challenge others to top performance
Act as a consensus builder to various stake holders to maintain directional support throughout the project life cycle
Manage multiple assignments concurrently, and prioritize them in a manner consistent with business goals
Successfully implement projects on time and within budget
Proactively inform management of project issues, delays and risks
Improve competitive market position by keeping abreast of state of the art developments in the trucking industry and applying the new knowledge to designs
Generate and implement ideas to continuously improve work environment, systems, tools, processes as well as product cost and quality
Use NX and other design tools to create and maintain 3D part designs, detailed 2D part and assembly drawings, GD&T, packaging studies, and installation diagrams
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university/college with 3 years of related experience required
BS/ME - Mechanical Engineering or related field required
Demonstrated CAD expertise, including surface development (NX) required
Demonstrated strong verbal & written skills required
Proven follow-through and ability to work independently required
Ability to work with other design areas to reconcile conflicting design solutions into robust and cost effective solutions required
Experience preparing and giving presentations required
Understanding of engineering & upstream/downstream processes required
Experience leading implementation of cross-functional improvement initiatives required
Experience with DTNA systems (SMARAGD, IMACS , etc.) required

Knowledge of vehicle assembly plant processes preferred
Demonstrated strategic foresight, ability to anticipate questions/next steps, and ability to motivate self and others preferred
