Job Overview

Daimler Trucks North America is the market leader and thrives as the voice of the trucking industry. Mechatronics Engineering combines mechanical engineering, controls engineering, software design, electronic hardware, sensors and electrical harnesses. As our vehicles grow in capability, especially in the areas of Connectivity, eMobility, Automated technology, Fuel Efficiency and Safety, our team is critical to the successful integration of an increasingly complex and secure vehicle network. We are responsible for supporting Mechatronics Engineering’s implementation of Cyber Security, Diagnostic & Programming strategy throughout the vehicle, as well as the design and integration of the Central Gateway (CGW) Electronic Control Unit (ECU), for Freightliner and Western Star Brands.

As an Engineer I, you will bring your enthusiasm and creativity, supporting the Mechatronics department to develop ECUs used both locally and globally. This position will focus on vehicle Cyber Security development support, which will heavily overlap with many of the team's other areas of responsibilities (AORs) (Diagnostics, Vehicle Programming, Gateway)

Responsibilities

  • Develop technical knowledge in vehicle Cyber Security – from mechanisms within each ECU, to their interfaces with each other on the vehicle, as well as to the outside world (e.g. offboard diagnostic tools, telematics systems), under the direction of the Mechatronics Engineering lead engineer for vehicle Cyber Security.

  • Actively participate in incorporating & evolving vehicle Cyber Security deliverables within the product development lifecycle, support Engineering teams to meet those deliverables as they apply to the vehicle and its ECUs, and develop training and reference information as needed.

  • Support ECU engineers & Suppliers in working through Cyber Security requirements clarification, implementation challenges, and validation topics.

  • Assist in coordinating ECU Cyber Security Conformance tests, including facilitating interpretation of results and support of teams for next steps.

  • Gain an understanding of vehicle Cyber Security offboard diagnostic tools and systems, closely collaborating with related teams across the company (Mechatronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Service Engineering, IT, Product Validation Engineering, etc.).

  • Support engineering teams to answer Custom Work Order (CWO), Shopcall, FRACAS and Zeus issues relevant to vehicle Cyber Security, to provide immediate problem resolution and evaluate each for final problem resolution/elimination.

  • Monitor and address ongoing production issues related to team AOR with swift and thorough corrective actions including both long term and short term initiatives. Ensure reliability and quality targets by analyzing issues and developing solutions to address field issues.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required with 1-2 years preferred (Experience in Electrical, Software, Computer or Mechatronics Engineering, or Computer Science is preferred)

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering principles with proven ability to apply technologies, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of vehicle electronic systems or related engineered components.

  • Working knowledge in electrical and electronic hardware and software

  • Understanding of engineering processes & downstream impacts.

  • Experience with identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems.

  • Demonstrated teamwork skills & ability to communicate effectively, especially in cross-functional collaboration.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead small projects.

  • Well organized, able to handle multiple, detailed tasks, and work professionally with various levels of management.

  • Demonstrated self-motivation, with ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Typical Minimum Experience Preferred (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Experience in Electrical, Software, Computer or Mechatronics Engineering, or Computer Science is preferred

  • Familiarity with programming / scripting (C/C , object-oriented programming, Java)

  • Knowledge of relevant vehicle Cyber Security industry standards, especially SAE/ISO 21434, and relevant concepts

  • Experience with vehicle networks, especially CAN & Automotive Ethernet

  • Experience with vehicle diagnostic communication protocols, especially UDS

  • Experience with Autosar Software Components (SWCs) processes and tools (DaVinci Configurator)

This position is open to consideration at the following locations:

Portland

Hybrid: Number of days at home and at the office will be determined through an ongoing conversation with your Manager. DTNA will ensure that your WFH set-up meets Wi-Fi / data minimum requirements and sets you up for success. Travel to the office is not reimbursed and employee must live close enough to attend regular in-person collaborative meeting with at least 24-hour notice.
